Signs Your Dog or Cat Might Be Trying to Tell You Something’s Wrong

Pets can’t tell us in words when something feels off — but their behavior almost always does. As a dog and cat care center, we see these subtle signs every day, and catching them early can make all the difference.

Signs to watch for in dogs:

  • Sudden change in appetite (eating a lot less or more than usual)
  • Excessive licking or scratching in one spot
  • Low energy or reluctance to go on walks
  • Panting or restlessness without physical activity
  • Avoiding stairs, jumping, or being touched in certain areas

Signs to watch for in cats:

  • Hiding more than usual
  • Changes in litter box habits
  • Excessive grooming or, oddly, no grooming at all
  • Decreased appetite or sudden weight change
  • Unusual vocalizing (more or less than normal)

When to just monitor vs. when to bring them in:
Minor changes that last a day or two are often nothing to worry about. But if a symptom lasts more than 48 hours, gets worse, or is paired with other changes (like lethargy plus appetite loss), it’s worth getting checked.

Not sure if what you’re seeing is something to worry about? Bring your pet in for a quick check — we’re always happy to take a look and put your mind at ease.
